Another year, another holiday. It's Valentine's Day! A day to spend all your money on your significant other, a day to show that special someone in your life you really love them. Or so we think. How did the Day of Love come to be?
Well, there are actually quite a few stories about how this holiday started up. Most of them saying Valentine's Day is a holiday created by Hallmark. But Valentine's Day is said to be a holiday dedicated to St. Valentine himself.
So, who was St. Valentine? St. Valentine or Valentinus was a priest during the 3rd century in Rome. During this time Rome's emperor, Claudius II decided that single men make better solidiers than those who had wives or children. With that Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for younger men; his potential soldiers. St.Valentine thought this law was outrageous, so he defied the emperors authority and went about marrying young couples in secret. Of course when Claudius discovered this he ordered that Valentinus be beheaded.
There you have it. The history behind the Holiday of Love. But just because young love was outlawed then, doesn't mean anything now. So happy Valentine's Day, to all the young loves out there.
