At the St. Vincent-St. Mary Doubles Invitational last Saturday, Hoban took second place.

Juniors Ian Rice and Andrew Gerbetz won the third doubles championship, while freshmen Tim Gorey and Erik Kasminsky won the championship in fourth doubles.

In their first match March 31, the Knights won all five courts against North at home.

Senior Ben Begley thought the win over North was a big confidence-booster.

"It felt good to beat them so badly right off the bat," he said. "It helped that they weren't very experienced."

Junior Ian Collins thinks his team is getting better.

"I've seen everybody show improvement each game," he said. "It's obvious we're all getting more practice. Ben Begley and Dave Wartko have spirit on the court that's unmatchable. They give it their all every game. Watching them makes me want to work to be a better player."

Coach George Koroshazi is proud of the Knights so far.

"We've been competitive in every match and have had to deal with a tough schedule," he said, referring to the matches scheduled every other day or sometimes three or four days in a row.

"Walsh was a tough match and we lost," Koroshazi said, "but I'm optimistic. We're having fun, and nobody's been hurt."

Koroshazi is looking forward to the remaining matches.

"The new North Coast League will bring a lot of challenges," he said. "Lake Catholic will be tough, and [Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy] should be a very good match."

Hoban lost 3-2 at Wadsworth March 1 and 5-0 against Walsh April 5. The Knights won the next day at Chippewa 3-2, but lost 5-0 at St. V-M April 13. Home matches against St. Thomas Aquinas April 14 and Ellet April 15, were wins.

Next match is tonight against Elyria Catholic at Hyre Park.
