“Just say NO,” Doug Flamm said, parent of seven children. That is the cliché response that most parents give when asked about drugs. If drugs were to be legalized, would they seriously pose a heavy weight on the progress of our youth? The truth is that drugs will always be a negative draw back on society for various obvious reasons. A person under the influence is subject to make irrational decisions. Not being able to think clearly will obviously affect the discernment between a joke or a serious comment or any other simple action that may be interpreted as something else. Libertarians have expressed that they would like drugs to be legalized. They say that people should do whatever they please as long as they do not hurt anybody. If so many people were high on any substance and not capable of making rational decisions, it is evident that peace will not be kept. Teenagers will definitely be the most affected group by this decision. “Young people and Mexicans will be the most affected,” said sophomore Aubrey Lamoreaux jokingly. The legalization of such stuff will make inexperienced youth try it and become addicted. Teens, not being able to truly know the dangers that await them once addicted, will support the consumption of drugs. If drugs were authorized, they will only need to be for medicinal purposes. This obviously will not be able to be enforced. “It needs to be only for medicinal purposes,” junior Ryan Flamm said. How will a police officer know if a person who is high really needs it for medicinal purpose? If drugs are more accessible, the cost of them will decrease because of its availability. If the cost comes down, then poor people will have the advantage to buy more. Poor people who are addicted will indebt themselves with drugs, hence ruining their financial future. Unmistakably, people really cannot have every freedom available to them because of their tendency to be irresponsible and abusive. Too much of a good thing can definitely become harmful.
