This year, several new students have joined the HFA student body and have come from all over Michigan, other states, and even other countries, for several reasons. Some students have been come thanks to parents and some have even followed younger siblings.

Last year, DeAndre Lee came to this school. He came because his little sister was accepted. He came from Detroit Community High and feels that HFA “is boring but o.k.” DeAndre thinks that this school is different from the others. Even though he likes it here, sometimes he misses his old school. When asked his opinion, he stated, “This school is very different from Detroit Community High.”

New student Zam Collins, junior, came from Southgate Anderson. He came for a better education and atmosphere. He stated, “I have enjoyed my experience here,” and feels that this school is better than his old one and he likes the campus. He wants to join the Basketball team and Mock Trial. Zam, like most students, appreciate that fact that here there are only four classes instead of six or seven. He doesn’t miss his school. When asked how HFA compares to his old school he says, “It’s better by far.”

Even the new parents of HFA seemed to think that they made a good choice for their children. New parent, Sandra Cooper, has two children in the school. One is a freshman and the other one is the only new senior at the school, Alexandra Payne. She heard about the school from a friend whose son attends HFA and likes what she sees so far. She says “The environment alone encourages the students to do well. I like the 90-minute block set-up. I think four classes are far more manageable than six. This gives kids more time to learn.” When asked why she transferred her child she said, “I did it in effort to get a better quality of education. I was looking for the best from my daughter and HFA appears to be what we are looking for.” She said it wasn’t a hard for choice for her to transfer, but for her daughters; she said, “The difficult part was convincing them that it was for the best. They were apprehensive about attending HFA. They were concerned about their friends, but now they are very excited to succeed.” When asked about her new daughter, she said, “She is very excited and looking forward to graduating next year.”
