For hundreds of years, people have set aside one day a year to pull out the most outrageous and hilarious pranks they can conjure.

According to Wikipedia, though the specific origin of the unofficial holiday on April 1 is often disputed, it is most commonly said that it started when the official calendar was switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Those who still celebrated the New Year on April 1—the first of the year on the Julian calendar—were said to be “fools.” This eventually evolved into pranks and practical jokes played annually on the day of fools, April 1.

At OHS, students and teachers also had a few tricks up their sleeves. Jeff Huelster, a history teacher, said he loves to make jokes on April Fools’ Day.

“I love to do stuff like the shaving cream on people’s hands while they sleep and using ketchup as fake blood.” Huelster said.

Another teacher, Susan Henry, gave her language arts students a fake timed-write with a prompt written by two students, seniors Jessica Conditt and Rebecca Mehnert. The prompts were based on excerpts from stories the two had written.

“I was a little bit upset but when I started reading it I really liked it, and then I was sad that all the timed-writes weren’t like this,” said senior Ashley Allman, who received the phony assignment during her third hour.

“It was such a good April Fools’ joke,” Allman said.
