Student Government hosted its first of a series of cultural activities yesterday during lunch with a demonstration by a Chinese martial arts group. They plan to continue these about every other Wednesday until the end of school, according to STUGO adviser Kevin Arndt.

Student body treasurer Jeremy Oulton spearheaded the effort to get OHS students more culturally aware.

“We need to experience different cultures and native ways in order to better understand personalities of students and peers,” Oulton said.

Arndt agrees that knowledge of other cultures is important to OHS “because they help us to understand someone else’s background and better appreciate them.”

The purpose of the culture committee is to increase awareness by highlighting a different culture each week during lunch. They have invited Mexican folk dancers and are planning a Vegemite-eating contest.
