It is seventh period and you’re ready for the day to end. Severe anxiety is running through you as you count down the clock. Tick. The second hand seems as if it is moving super slowly, taking its time as it glides at snail speed in circles. Tock. One minute passes and the teacher is still preaching on about factoring, Henry David Thoreau, or how to calculate the mass of an isotope of Magnesium. All you’re wishing for is an interruption. Suddenly, your call is answered as a young member of your peers enters the classroom, pink slips in hand. It’s an office worker.

With so much going on in an average school day, the ALHS office staff may be in need of some additional assistance. That is when the student office workers come in handy. Office workers are students who help in the main office by taking on some of the tasks necessary to have a properly functional school day. A regular day in the life of an office worker is one that includes delivering slips for students, answering phone calls, folding attendance notes, organizing attendance notes and other necessary things in the CRC or in the main office.

"It’s really easy and hardly ever demanding," said junior Alik Smed.

There isn’t a daily routine that’s followed by these students. Instead, they often just go with the day-to-day needs of the students, staff and teachers of ALHS. The student assistants usually make appearances at the end of the class periods in order to avoid disrupting the classroom.

"There is no schedule, we just go by peoples needs," said CRC secretary Jennifer Zoller.

The demands of being an office worker vary depending on the day. For instance, shorter days or half days might be busier due to parents calling to know when to pick up their kids. Although some days may be hectic, there are many benefits from being an office worker. These include receiving one credit, picking up basic office skills, meeting interesting people, working in the positive atmosphere of the office and going by the day-to-day basic needs of the school instead of a set schedule.

"I can make copies way faster now and it helps you with secretarial skills," Smed said.

The office job is suitable for anyone who would like to replace a study hall, someone who is interested in trying something new or likes to be organized. Some of the present student office workers include Alik Smed, Taylor Friehl, Abby Arends, Madi Passingham, Megan Pulley and Jeff Bodensteiner.

To sign up for the position of an office worker you can talk to Jen Zoller in the CRC or Sandra Jimenez in the main office.

"The office staff is really nice, so it makes it fun," said junior Taylor Friehl.
