For most students who attended East Muskingum Middle School in the sixth grade, sixth grade camp is one of the best memories for those students. For many, it may be the one thing that is looked back on as a happy experience from those awkward years.

Some fond memories from camp may include fishing, creeking, outdoor games and the campfire.

“I remember the hike back from the camp fire and it being dark and spooky feeling,” said junior Jaclyn Young.

“I remember fishing was fun,” said junior Kyle Moore.

Others may have had some not so pleasant memories from the trip, but looking back seem funny.

“After creeking in the stream, I was so wet that I had to lay my clothes out in the sun to dry,” said junior Lynn Wheeler.

Also for some, the bus ride was the roughest part.

“I remember on the way back home, I threw-up on the bus,” said Young.

For some, when they get to high school they may want to make the experience of sixth grade camp special for the current sixth graders, like Moore who had the privilege of being a counselor this year.

“I wanted to be a counselor because when I was at camp I had fun and I wanted to make the kids’ time there fun also,” said Moore.

There were 16 high school students selected to be a part of the experience this year.

“There were eight girls and eight boys, four went each week,” said junior Shelby Zaleski.

Zaleski was one of the eight girls selected to go to camp with the sixth grade class.

One job of a counselor is to be up for anything, including being in costume.

“My most memorable moment there was when I was dressed up like a Girl Scout,” said Moore.

Although being a counselor is fun it also comes with responsibilities. It is the counselor’s job to watch out for the kids and keep them safe.

Reliving childhood is one of the many rewards counselors receive as a result of the experience; giving the kids a great, memorable experience is the best reward.
