At the first annual Pier Park Relays on Sept. 28, the varsity and junior varsity cross country teams raced together in five-man teams. Out of the six teams that ran, each person travelled a mile and the team covered five miles total over a difficult course.

The race was considered one of the last less-serious meets of the year by many. "It was just a fun race to participate in and to watch! I don't think Cleveland has ever entered in a meet like this before, so it was very exciting," said junior varsity captain Davis Einolf.

And exciting it was with a grueling second place finish awarded to Cleveland's top team of the day. The second place team consisted of seniors Logan Banning-Shuaughnessy, Mitchell Robertson, and Daniel Stone, and juniors Adrian Hinkle and Christopher Hinkle.

A few runners even had to accept the responsibility and take two legs for the good of the team. "I ran the first leg for a varsity team and the last leg for a JV one. It was definitely tough and I only had a little rest in between each of my miles, but it was a good challenge," said junior Ethan Livermore.

This meet drew not only league competitors but also Grant and The Dalles-Wahtonka high schools to make for a broader field. It featured a men’s race with 14 other relay teams, not including the Cleveland team.

With a clear path ahead to the district meet, the team aims high and hopes to regain the league title that was lost last year. "I am not nervous about this team. Bottom line, we're going to do well at districts," said Livermore. Now confidences and training are coming to a peak as the season is hitting its midpoint.
