Cleveland’s Jessica Crown will hit the big time with her poetry. The sophomore is getting published in a feel-good national publication.

Nearly six years ago Jessica sat in her room reading “Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul” when the mailing address on the back of the book caught her eye. Intrigued, she instantly wrote a poem about friendship.

“I’ve always had one really close friend and I was thinking about how all of my other friends just talked behind my back, so it’s just about my view on friendship at that time. It’s short but it’s good,” Crown said about the poem. “I used to write in my journal a lot, that’s where this poem came from. But I don’t do that any more, now I usually just write for school.”

Over the years Jessica forgot about this poem, but the publishers at “Chicken Soup” did not.

A few years later, while sitting in her living room, Jessica got a phone call from the publishers saying they were interested in using her poem as a chapter starter for their next book. They sent her a couple of forms to fill out, and that was that.

Aside from having her poem published in the next book titled “Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul II,” there will also be a short bibliography about Jessica in the back of the book. As thanks to Jessica, the people at “Chicken Soup” are sending her a free author’s edition of the book, and she will be receiving anywhere from $50 to $100 dollars for rights to her poem.

The book is coming out in March and Jessica’s poem is called “Be a Good Friend” if you want to check it out. The Clarion was unable to reprint the poem due to copyright laws.
