On March 19, Southern Door High School hosted and participated in Solo and Ensemble for another successful year. Of the 39 events, with 54 students competing, 23 band students qualified for state. The vocal department had 49 events, with 45 students, and has 32 students qualified for state.

Students are graded on a 1 to 10 point scale with 1 being the best. The judge evaluated the performances based on tone, intonation, accuracy, technique and expression. Individuals or groups that score a 5 to 8 qualified for the State Solo and Ensemble Festival at UW-Green Bay on Saturday, May 7. The instrumental participants faced tougher judges this year for all were Master Adjudicators, who have years of experience in the field.

However, experienced judges weren't the only obstacle the participants had to overcome. Mrs. Heyer, the band teacher, was on maternity leave earlier this school year. As such, students had to individually prepare for the competition. While fewer students participated, those that did proved themselves.

"Preparing for contests teaches students the value of hard work," said senior band member Jonathan C., "Solo and Ensemble is a very important part of band. Performing at Solo and Ensemble is a rewarding experience for many band members." Solo and Ensemble provides positive feedback and motivation for students interested in music. It improves performance and increases understanding of musical concepts. "Solo and Ensemble is when students see the most improvement in performing," said Ms. Heyer, reiterating that competition is of vital importance to music programs.

Vocal and Band students continue to work hard in preparation for the festival on May 7, when hopefully the students will have continued success.
