Kelsey dives for a ground ball. -
The Eagles won their WIAA regional softball game over rival Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday 4-3. The Eagles, 16-1 overall, will host Denmark on Thursday night. Denmark crushed L-C 11-1.

The game was a great battle of defensive efforts, as both teams had their fair share of defensive stops. The ball was hit many times throughout the night, however several batters didn’t reach base. One great defensive play that gave the Eagles momentum was in the fifth inning when Kelsey K. dove for a ground ball. She got up, threw it to first base to get an out. As a result the Eagles won the game

“The defense played really well. I thought Natalie L. had some great pop-up catches. We were real solid on defense,” said coach Delcore.

The Eagles scored first in the ball game. Junior Robyn P. reached base by a fielder’s choice, then stole second base. With two outs, senior Kelsey K. crushed the ball deep into center field to receive a double and it also drove in Robyn.

The Eagles punched a few more runs in the fifth inning. Liz N. led off the inning and smashed the ball for a double. Next was a sacrifice bunt by Courtney W. Then she scored on a single by Ashley K. Ashley then reached home with singles by Tia J. and Amber S. to put the Eagles up 3-0.

In the sixth inning the Clippers rallied to tie the score at three-all.

“Well to be honest, I wasn’t sure how they would (respond), but all year they have responded to tough situations, they responded real well,” stated Delcore.

Despite the rally, it didn’t falter the Eagles. With one out in the inning Heather smashed the ball for a triple in right-center. Sturgeon Bay’s Stephanie S. threw a wild pitch, the catcher quickly scrambled to retrieve the ball and then Heather D. took off towards home to score the winning run.

“I saw Heather had a good jump on it and she was going to get there. With our defense and I knew if we had a one run lead, I felt like we were in a pretty good situation,” said Delcore.

Eagles’ pitcher Courtney W. had three strikeouts in the game as well. The Eagles play Denmark at home on Thursday, May 25.
