Robyn Madouse teaches her english class. - Monette Jenkins
This year’s new teachers are still getting used to this high school and have different perspectives on how this year has been so far.
Robyn Madouse, a Freshman English teacher, said, “It is very fast paced, the students are kind and courteous and the staff has been welcoming.” She started teaching last year at the Churchill County Jr. High School and taught 7th grade English. She has had her teaching degree for two years and got her degree at Eastern Michigan University. Her switch from CCJHS to the Churchill County High School “was very busy over the summer, I always wanted to teach high school so it was a relatively easy switch.” Madouse did not always want to be a teacher. She had a lot of careers that she was interested in and did not have an interest in teaching until she reached high school. She was inspired to teach by her writing teacher in high school; the teacher told her that she would make a great teacher, and she wanted to be one ever since.
Tami Harmon, a Freshman Reading teacher, has had a good year so far, “the staff is very friendly and helpful.” She taught in Yerington and also taught at CCJHS. Harmon got her teaching degree in 1992 and got it at UNR. She was inspired to teach by some of the teachers in high school that pushed her towards teaching. She wanted to teach here because her husband works in Fallon so she wanted to stay close. She said, “It’s been a good three weeks so far.”
Bill Coblentz, a new biology teacher, has enjoyed this year so far, “I like teaching science better than math, and I click more with high school students than junior high students,” Coblentz said. This year his fourth year as a certified teacher, but has taught teenagers for seven years. He has had his teaching degree for four years and got it at Luis Clark State College. He said he was inspired to teach “because when I was a teenager it seemed like no one cared, so I thought I could go and maybe help other people.” He did not always want to be a teacher; he had many careers before deciding that teaching was he wanted to do.
Samantha Maitland, an English teacher, is on her first year of ever teaching. Maitland has always wanted to teach, but didn’t follow that path until she finally realized she wanted to follow her dream. She’s had her teaching degree since June of 2009 it at Nova South Eastern University in Florida. She likes the students, the staff and the fact that she is working in a small town. She said, “This year was a learning curve because it’s something new.”
T.W. Cunningham, P.E, Basketball, and Athletic Conditioning teacher said, “I like this year so far because I like the class schedule and the kids in those classes.” Cunningham started teaching in 2001. This is not his first teaching job, which makes this year his master’s degree at Grand Canyon University. He was inspired by his parents, who were both teachers, and he saw that they did alright. Cunningham has always wanted to teach wherever he was at and this year has been more than what he expected it would be.
All the teachers have had a good year so far. They all said that their move was a good move to CCHS. They think they will have a good rest of their year.
