An unsung hero is someone who isn't the star of the team, but is essential to its success. Highlands sports teams are filled with unsung heroes. A player who outshines them all is Tyler Combs, number 77, center on the varsity football team. Combs says his inspiration is his Dad, who was proud of him for playing football. Since his father's passing Combs wants to keep his Dad proud, saying, "I play for him."
Coach Dale Mueller chose Combs as the unsung hero saying, "Tyler is incredibly important to the team and deserves this title because he has phenomenal work habits, is incredibly tough both physically and mentally, has unlimited energy, is a dependable person, and is a great center".
When Combs was asked if he deserved this position he stated, "I worked really hard to get where I am today, but there were people who pushed me and helped me to get to that point".
Teammate Cameron Dierig is among many who define Combs as an unsung hero, "Combs is a hard worker who gives it his all at every practice and game, and in off season he works out almost everyday". Combs holds pride in the team and enjoys being a player on the Highlands football team because of the "tradition of excellence" at Highlands.
Combs also shows his gratitude to the other players on the team, commending Kody Rosenhagen and Jared Frank whom he says also deserve to be "unsung heroes". "Kody has battled injuries all year and he is a great player and he needs to be seen as a leader on the team, and Jared Frank is a great athlete and no one sees it",says Combs. Every player on the Highlands football team is a hero in the crowd's eyes, but Tyler Combs, number 77, shows impeccable strength both mentally and physically.
