The Central girls 200 medley, 200 freestyle relay and junior Maddie Sommerfeld’s 50 freestyle finished their season at the state competition in St. Peters.

“As a whole, our relays did pretty well,” said Sommerfeld. “Our 200 freestyle relay got its best time.”

The team didn’t make it past the day of preliminary races, but they did make some personal accomplishments. Overall the 200 freestyle placed 24th and the 200 medley relay placed 27th. In the 50 freestyle, Sommerfeld swam a time of 26.39 seconds.

This year there was also another relay team that came very close to qualifying for state. The 400-meter freestyle relay consisting of Beckman, Sommerfeld, Croessmann and Randall dropped seven seconds off their pre-existing best time at their last qualifying meet. Even though they made a major time drop they still did not qualify for state, by less than a second.

The team qualified for the most events for state competition since coach Wendy Shepard has been at Central. They qualified in the 200-meter free style relay, 200-meter medley relay and the 50-meter free style.

Members of the 200 freestyle relay are Olivia Croessmann, Alex Beckman, seniors; Sommerfeld and Allie Prater, juniors.

Members of the 200 medley relay are Prater, Beckman, Brittany Randall, senior, and Sommerfeld.

The star swimmer this season seems to be Sommerfeld, who is competing on both of the relay teams and is the only individual from Central to qualify in an individual event, the 50 freestyle.

One thing that Sommerfeld believes keeps her in peak swimming condition is that she swims on a club team at Drury in the off-season.

“You’re allowed to swim four events, so I have almost qualified for them all,” said Sommerfeld.

Not only has the team worked swimming laps to improve their times, but thegot out of the pool and into the weight room. By lifting weights, Shepard hopes the swimmers strengthen their core stability, as well as improve their kicking and endurance
