Route 114 has always been a busy road, with many people frequently using it to go to and from work. This road also connects the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and the New River Valley Mall. For a long time, Pepper’s Ferry was only a two-lane road, which caused numerous traffic delay problems if there were accidents or wrecks along it.
However, work has recently begun to make a nearly three-fourths-of-a-mile stretch into five lanes, with two lanes going westbound and two going eastbound, with a fifth lane serving as a turn lane in the center. The stretch is located between Stafford Drive and Dominion Drive. Also, sidewalks will be added on both sides to give residents easier access to many Christiansburg businesses.
Route 114 is known for having heavy traffic, especially during rush hours. Its lack of a turn lane has only added to complications. The construction to improve the road began in January 2009, and is projected to finish sometime in late summer to fall of 2010. The estimated cost for this project is nearly $4.2 million dollars.
