Arroyo has once again placed first in the City of El Monte CRV Recycling Contest and won a grand prize of $1000. For the past 6 years, Arroyo has consistently placed at least in the top three of the schools in the district who have competed in this contest. In total the participating schools have collected 4,682 pounds of material.

The second place went to Twin Lakes Elementary School and third place went to Madrid Middle Schools.

The contest aims to promote being environmentally sustainable and going green, and it also brings money into the school. Assistant Principal of Instruction, Angie Gonzales-Hernandez, states, “We started this mainly to support the AP kids and we put the money into a fund to help students who couldn’t afford certain things like tennis shoes.”

Most of the recycling comes from the efforts of the ICE students. After lunch, the students will collect bottles and recyclables from the trash. Some teachers also send over bottles that they have in their classrooms.

This contest ran from November 1st to December 9th. However, in addition this recycling is year round. Ultimately this recycling raises about $600 a year.

“Recycling is important. We at Arroyo are proud to participate in this program. The final results are not who recycles the most but that by recycling we are modeling for our students and community that everyone can help the environment and work toward helping keep the planet green.”
