Cindy Shumway wasn’t supposed to win the 200 freestyle competition. She had one of the outside lanes and was supposed to come in behind others, including her teammate, Alex Wardwell. Usually the inside lane swimmers finish in top spots, but this day didn’t go to a girl from Lander or one from Jackson who had those preferred positions. When the race ended, Shumway heard someone yell at her to get out of the water. Before she even had time to catch her breath, she got a huge congratulatory hug from teammate Wardwell, who had swum on the opposite outside lane.

Cindy said, “She (Alex) was really cool about it...she won 1st at Conference and I won State, so that was great for both of us.”

“I was really excited for her because she works really hard and as a senior, she deserved to win,” said Wardwell. Being a junior, Wardwell still has next year to try for a state championship.

Shumway has a busy life at Powell High School and beyond. She is active in Student Council and FFA, which doesn’t leave her a lot of free time after school work.

Although she loves to swim, Cindy doesn’t want to make swimming her whole life. She has considered swimming in college, but her immediate plans will most likely involve two years at Northwest College to get some of her pre-requisite classes completed. After that she plans to transfer to a school where she can major in kinesiology. Cindy hopes to pursue a career in sports medicine at the college level
