Imagine waking up to your daily routine and finding a letter form a foreign high school student, saying that you are to live with their family in an entirely new country for the remainder of the school year. Jèrôme Berlingin told of a familiar incident, "I awoke, and opened my mail as I always do, and it was Crystal [Grover] writing to tell me that I was to live in her home". Jèrôme arrived here from Belgium not long before Lompoc High School’s 2009-2010 School year began. His experiences here along with the interactions with the general public could only be described as ‘alien’. When he began an explanation of the differences in this country and his own, he mentioned the unnatural way that people meet and bond, "It’s easier to make friends in Belgium, but when you know someone in America, the link is stronger" when asked to clarify his meaning of "easier" he began to explain that "when you’re in a group, everyone is talking to you, and trying to make you a part of it all". Jèrôme even shows the average drive that every teenager can follow. " We both share the love for the drums", said Azaria Johnson, " I also think it’s cool how he plays guitar and sings in French" she went on to say exactly how "kind" he is compared to some students on campus. Soccer or "futbol" is a pastime that has fused with European culture. "Here it’s more technical, while in Belgium is more physical". Along the lines of physical, when asked about girls, he only said he "Plan(s) on having fun", with no addition or explination. Given the chance to say one thing to all his peers in Lompoc, he could only say, "I love Lompoc" as he lifted both thumbs awkwardly and smiled.
