A game that freshman starting running back Dante Whicker said was an obvious win was the end of the J.V football team’s undefeated streak after conceding an embarrassing 22-0 loss to the Wootton Patriots.
The Wootton Stadium had an aura of pride as the home fans clapped for their J.V football team and booed the visiting Panthers. The referee called both teams’ captains to the middle of the field for a coin toss (Brian Hart for Paint Branch and Papadopoulos for Wootton). Paint Branch won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. Freshman Manyo-Ojong received the ball and gained thirty-five yards for the Panthers. The Panthers gained 15 yards on their second play and then, thanks to a pass to Wesley Stewart, gained a good three more yards after catching a perfect pass from Hart. Sam Zachs tackled the Panther quarterback leading to a fumble and turnover in the Patriots favor. Except for an interception by Tristan Toliver, for the Panthers the 1st quarter ended uneventfully with the score at 0-0.
The game waged on uneventfully until the Patriots finally put points up on the board after receiving a safety making the score 2-0. The Patriots then begun their act of dominance over the Panthers when soon after, a thirty yard run to the end zone put the score at 8-0, Wootton. The kick off to the Panthers, whose hopes of winning hadn’t diminished yet, was received by Toliver who ran it to the 50-yard line. The Panthers wasted possession, though, with 2 of the 12 incomplete passes that Hart would throw in the game. The 2nd quarter was soon over, and the Panthers’ stands buzzed with conversation between parents, discussing how their kids still had a chance of winning the game - a chance which they, unfortunately, wouldn’t take.
The 2nd half began with the now fueled Patriots, determined to continue their run, and the Panthers, determined to turn the game around. Hart threw 3 more incomplete passes, something that became a trend of his throughout the game. A beautiful tackle of the Patriots quarterback led to a fumble which gained the Panthers the ball. Hart made a big play in the game by running the ball five yards in front of the Patriot end zone, but a flag was called for illegal shift and the Panthers lost five yards. Hart received the first of six sacks throughout the game, and the Patriots received the ball. On the next Wootton possession, Popadopolus threw an interception to Andres Iraheta, an interception that was wasted again. The Patriot reign of dominance continued when wide receiver Shawn Wallace ran the ball from the Panthers’ 10-yard line to the end zone for a touchdown and, with Papadopoulos’ extra point, the score was now 15-0, third quarter.
The Patriots began the fourth quarter with the ball inches from the Panther defensive linemen, who were able to hold the Patriots off despite the Patriots getting a mere yard to a touchdown. The Panthers, however, could not capitalize on the momentum, as the impressive work of the defensive linemen went unrewarded and the Panthers could not move the ball. A few minutes later, Papadopoulos ran the ball in from the Panthers’ 30-yard line for another touchdown and scored another extra point which led to the game’s final score o 22-0. The quarter ended and as, the rejoicing Patriots went back to the dressing room, the J.V players received a lecture from an annoyed Coach Walker who screamed, “On Saturday I want you all at Paint Branch at 8:00 and you better be ready to work!” With their record now at 2-1, hopefully this will be the Panthers' fuel to defeat their rival school, James Hubert Blake.
