Twenty-four-year-old terrorism suspect Najibullah Zazi was arrested by officials and indicted by a federal grand jury during the past week after a thorough investigation by the FBI, starting on September 9th. Zazi has been accused of conspiring with at least 3 other accomplices throughout the United States to “deploy weapons of mass destruction in the form of hydrogen peroxide bombs,” according to The Washington Post.
Investigators say that in August of 2008, Zazi traveled to Pakistan to participate in four months of training to acquire skills necessary to develop and operate explosives, provided by al-Queda. Federal and local authorities have discovered a wide range of evidence varying from handwritten notes containing information on how to create explosives and detonators to a scale and batteries. Also being arrested was Zazi’s father, Mohammed Wali Zazi, and Ahmad Wais Afzali, who has been in communication with Zazi as well as his father. The three were charged with “lying in a matter involving terrorism." Former national security advisor for counterterrorism Juan Zarate comments that, this rises to the top in terms of level of concern in the post-9/11 environment."
