You’re looking at the school website, you go to fall sports page, and low and behold, you find out that there is a golf team here at Paint Branch. PB’s golf team operates just like any other sport; they practice; they play; they win!

    The golf team is coached by Commander DeCavage and has a nine member team. With a record of 11-4, they are third in the running to win for their division, Kohut. At weekly matches, PB’s golfers play against other schools in their division and play in groups of threes and fours, based on each golfer’s skill level.

    Current Golf number one, Junior, Nicholas Ponafala, is the 18^th best player in Montgomery County schools and 1^st in the Kohut Division. Ponafala and his twin brother, Jeremy, lead the Paint Branch team.            

    In addition to the Ponafalas, two other players to look out for are Ashley Cane and Britney Campbell, the only girls on the team. In the county’s weekly matches that are held at Laytonsville Golf Course, Cane and Campbell play against other girl golfers in the Girls individuals Montgomery County tournaments.

    Cane, a rising golfer, played in a Varsity team match September 28 and recorded the winning point for her team, says, “…It feels great to beat the boys!”

    Other golfers on the team include: Blake Brooks, Ashton Cane, Daniel Martin, Kavi Girdhar, and Alexander Yee.
