Famously Unfamous

It seems in today’s world that everyone is always trying to become famous. They want to become the next big celebrity, movie star, or singer. Let’s face it, who didn’t want to be famous as a kid?

But, as we look at young Hollywood, it’s hard to name one teen celebrity who has sustained his/her fame, past or present. Put it this way; when it comes to fame -- the younger the celebrity, the shorter it lasts.

Pondering in my head a "celebrity" who was "young & fresh" at one point, I am reminded of the young star Abigail Breslin, the young "sweetheart" who stole America’s heart as Olive in Little Miss Sunshine. She was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar but didn’t win. She claimed her fame and held a "short" career in movies with roles in films like No Reservations and Definitely, Maybe. Her two-year career left much to be desired, and her career is now buried in the Graveyard of Fame.

Looking on the Internet, I found the jackpot, a database of young celebrities. As I peered through the pages, I could not help but notice that I could recognize only about half of the people. After I looked at each person’s "claim to fame," I gasped in surprise, exclaiming, "That was them?" The list is long but I selected a few choice celebrities who hit fame young and then saw their careers die quickly.

Do you remember the movie Finding Nemo? If you do, you will surely remember Nemo. Well, the voice of the little fish was Alexander Gould (ever heard of him? I haven’t). His career is over, and we didn’t even get to see his face.

Next on the list is our shining light Jamie Lynn Spears from Zoey 101. She stole our tween hearts in 2005 as Zoey Brooks, a student at PCA, and she held onto our hearts and her show until 2008. The teen actress and singer destroyed her franchise, show, and any chance of sustaining fame when she got pregnant at 16. Now all we can hope is that a baby doesn’t "hit" her one more time.

Demi Lovato has been a constant in the tabloids and celebrity news stations lately. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, we met her as Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: the Final Jam! The duration of her fame lasted a few months due to the popularity of her Disney films. She still has a "career," but the 18-year-old actress and singer-songwriter couldn’t handle the rocking pressures of life on "the stage" and landed herself into a rehabilitation center. If that doesn’t spell the end, I don’t know what will.

Giving up your childhood or your teenage years to "grace" the silver screen and trot down the red carpet may not be as glamorous as we have been lead to believe. Going into depression over "not getting work" or upset over losing a part in a "big" movie is not worth trading in the seemingly simple pressures of a normal life. So if fame is your claim, then wait, because adolescent celebrities’ careers and fame die young.
