NEWPORT- Beckman's Varsity Baseball team had a very impressive away game on Tuesday, April 10 against the Costa Mesa Mustangs. It was a shut-out game ending in a Beckman win with a final score of 24-0.
During the game, the Patriots proved to be the superior team with better communication and focus. "Our overall team chemistry just outmatched Costa Mesa's that day," said sophomore Chase Bartholomew. Every member of the Beckman team came home with at least one RBI (runs batted in) and one hit.
Bartholomew had a more notable game than some of the other players, with the most hits of the team. The sophomore was able to make contact in four out of five at-bats and hitting two runs. He also brought four teammates to the plate leading the team in RBIs. He commented, "I just had the mentality of swinging at the first strike pitched."
The Patriots were on top of their game in terms of both hitting and fielding. In nine innings, the Mustangs were only able to achieve one hit. With three pitchers rotating in and out, a one-hit game is a very impressive feat. "The pitching was fantastic that game, the one time they did get a hit, we backed up the pitcher and didn't let them score," said senior Grant Barring.
Overall, the Patriots played an outstanding season so far and hope to continue winning games. As the defending champions of the CIF title, the team looks forward to maintain their legacy. "If we just keep playing the best ball we can, there's a good chance we'll be a contender in the playoffs," said Bartholomew. Barring, a key player from last year's championship team, said that the best way to reach the championships is to take it one game at a time, a mentality that has served the team well. There is no doubt that other teams consider Beckman as the team to beat in the race for the hardware.
