A group of eight burgeoning young poets read their poetry aloud in front of a crowd at the annual Arnold O. Beckman coffeehouse inside the library media center.
“April is poetry month, so we have a poetry contest to celebrate that,” said librarian Mrs. Eley.
Poets were selected by submitting their original work of no more than 30 lines into the library by Wednesday, April 11. Three English teachers selected the top eight winners out of the 14 who applied.
Special guest Ms. Huber, the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Library Services Supervisor, kicked off the poetry reading with an excerpt from her poetry book entitled, Measuring Twine.
Following their respective introductions, each individual participant read their poems aloud in front of the library behind a podium equipped with a microphone.
Artists included sophomores Noah Guzman, Tiffany Quach, Alexandra Liaw, Ellen Huang, and Hannah Kinnen. Junior Vy-Hang Quach and senior Harinee Maiyuran also represented their creativity.
“The speech was really nerve-wracking but it was nice because people actually listened to what I had to say,” said sophomore Alexandra Liaw of her poem “Lost in Man’s Ambition.”
Over 100 parents, students, and teachers were in attendance at the reading, a considerably larger turnout than year’s past.
“The event was very successful, we had a huge turnout, and nearly every seat was filled,” added Mrs. Eley.
To set the tone, light jazz music was played in the background. Table cloths, electric candles, and small bouquets of flowers also contributed to the subdued atmosphere.
Starbuck’s coffee and various sweets were provided for the enjoyment of the poets and their supporters.
