Congratulations Dr. Blessing T. Mupanduki, Desert Mirage High School teacher, his dissertation research paper “The Effectiveness of a Standards-Based Integrated Chemistry and Mathematics Curriculum on Improving the Academic Achievement in Chemistry for High School Students in Southern California” won the California Educational Research Association’s (CERA) 2009 Outstanding Paper Award!  CERA has also invited Dr. Mupanduki to be a presenter at the 2009 CERA State Conference in November in San Francisco, and to attend the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) national/international conference as a representative of the sate of California in April 2010 in Colorado.  Each state is given one presentation slot and Dr. Mupanduki is the presenter for California and will address approximately 14,000 national and international scholars, researchers and educators

 

**On Friday, the 23rd of October Dr. Mupanduki along with one of his students and an administrator will be interviewed by Mary Silverman, Producer of KPSP Local 2’s Eye on the Desert.   Dr. Mupanduki will be featured as one of Coachella Valley Unified School District’s “Top Teachers.”  Filming will take place at Desert Mirage HS and will air on Tuesday, October 27, at 5:45 p.m. 

 

Other “Top Teachers” who have been featured on Eye of the Desert are Jenny Lopez-Ngigi, Vince Macy, Monica Murillo and Brian Katz.  Last month Maribel Solis, Las Palmitas 2nd grade teacher was featured.  You may watch that segment on KPSP Local 2’s website http://www.kpsplocal2.com/entertainment/default.aspx

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2009 – WSHS LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL

The WSHS ASES After school program keeps kids safe and healthy, inspires students to learn and helps working families.  After school programs need more resources and mores support. WSHS is proud to join students, parents, educators and community leaders at 7,500 rallies across the country in calling for “after school for all” for Lights on Afterschool!

Join WSHS from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in their courtyard for free food, games and prizes.  For more information contact staff at WSHS at (760) 394-4331.

 

Friday, October 23, 2009 – BDMS Fundraiser at McDonalds in Coachella

Teachers and staff wil be working side by side with McDonald’s employees at this event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the McDonalds on Ave 48 (in the Jackson Square shopping center). The radio station 92.7 will be there to help promote the event.  They will have face painting, balloons, and for every meal purchased, customers get a chance to enter a raffle for 4 passes to a selected movie at Rancho Mirage 16.  CVUSD teams come out and join the Bobby Duke Middle School team for dinner!  20% of totals sales inside McDonalds during 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will go to our BDMS!

 

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 – DIAL 1+AREA CODE IN 760 AND 442

The new 442 area code is being added to the region served by 760.  Since two area codes will soon serve the same region, customers with a 760 (or 442) area code must now dial 1 + the area code for all calls – including calls within the same area code.

This means, if you have a 760 phone number and call another 760 phone number, you will have to dial 1 + the area code. You will no longer be able to dial just the 7-digit phone number. You will be required to dial 11 digits. 

 

Beginning October 24, 2009, if you do not use 1 + the area code, your call will not be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again.  Beginning November 21, 2009, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 442 area code.

 

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 – HOWL’OWEEN PARADE OF PETS

The Desert Recreation District will host the parade beginning at 10 a.m. at the La Quinta Community Center.  There will be a costume parade, children’s activities, games, costume contests, pet/owner photos, pet pare experts, salons, veterinarians and more.  For more information call (760) 347-3484.  Sponsored by Desert Recreation District and the City of La Quinta. 

 

Saturday, October 24, 2009 – 6TH ANNUAL BEACH CLEANUP

The California Coastal Commission is proud to announce that the state’s biggest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day, is preparing to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. The 25th Annual Cleanup, sponsored by the Coastal Commission and Whole Foods Market, will take place at more than 750 locations around the state. On a local level, Ingrid Vigeant, Coordinator for Imperial and parts of Riverside Counties along with Rick Davis, Site Captain for Salton City will be leading the cleanup at two locations of the Salton Sea.  One is the fishing Pier at the Sate Recreation area on the North Shore and the other will be in Salton City on Yacht Club  Dr. where the Old Yacht Club was located from 8 am to noon. Volunteers may arrive at any time and spend as much time as they feel like helping out, all day or a half hour, all efforts are appreciated.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 – CVUSD ASES and Coachella’s Halloween Festival and a Movie

Calling all ghosts and goblins to come out and trick or treat! Dress in your Halloween best and join us for fun, games and kids costume contest!  The free event will be at Dateland Park on Shady Lane and Bagdad Ave. from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  The movie will be Tim Burtons’s Corpse Bride Presented by CVUSD ASES program; City of Coachella, Coachella Chamber of Commerce and Desert Recreation District.  For more information call (760) 398-8089.

 

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 – PALM VIEW SCHOOL Fundraiser at MCDONALDS

Have dinner at McDonalds and support Palm View School.  School earns 20% of all sales from 4:00-7:00 pm.

 

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2009 -  CVUSD 2009-10 UNITED WAY OF THE DESERT CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF BOWLING FUNDRAISER

Registration is $20 per person 5 to 6 persons per team.  Attached is a team sign-up sheet, complete and return at your earliest convenience.  There are only 24 lanes which will be filled on first come first serve bases.  If you are not able to bowl please come out and support your school site or department.  There will be plenty of prizes!  This event will be held at Fantasy Lanes from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Thank you for your continued support!  I’m also accepting any old trophies if you’d like to donate for the cause.  For more information contact Anita Meraz, at (760) 399-5137, ext. 216 or email ameraz@cvusd.us

THURSDAY, November 5, 2009 – 2ND ANNUAL FOSTER YOUTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE

The Riverside County Department of Public Social Services, Children's Services Division, will be hosting this event from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Cal State University San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus.  The purpose of this conference is to increase awareness of the educational needs concerning children and youth in foster care, Care Givers, Educators and Social Workers are invited to attend.  They also welcome organizations to participate in providing an informational booth for all participants to obtain a better understanding of services available within our communities.  For more information call (951) 358-3410.

Eat in, or take home!  All you have to do is present a flyer (forthcoming) to the cashier anytime between 2 p.m. to close and Mountain Vista will receive 20% of your transaction!  Rubio’s Restaurant is located in La Quinta at Hwy 111 and Washington. 

You must bring the flyer (forthcoming) for Mountain Vista to receive fundraising credit.

 

Saturday, November 7, 2009 – CVHS HEALTH ACADEMY CPR FUNDRAISER

By popular demand, CVHS Health Academy is having another CPR class fundraiser from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at CVHS.  Heartsaver® CPR offers all participants Trained and Certified in CPR, including:  Adult, Child & Infant CPR, Rescue Breathing & Choking Intervention; Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, Victim Assessment; and 2-year American Heart Association CPR certificate.  The cost is $30 per participant or $25 pre-paid! (on, or before Friday 10/6)  Cash or make check payable to: “CVHS Partnership Academy Student Senate”.  Pre-register by sending an email (CVUSD employees only) to simon.moore@cvusd.us and pay day of event $25.  Or, pay full amount at the event $30.  *All proceeds to benefit programs of the Health Academy of Coachella Valley High School.

 

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2009 – PLANNED PARENTHOOD 1ST ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR

This free health fair is open to the public. There will be free vaccinations, blood pressure, glucose and other screenings, Zumba, (aerobic fitness program) for children.  The event will take place at the Planned Parenthood and CET buildings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 49-111 Hwy 111, in Coachella.  For more information call (760) 386-7860.

 

Sunday, November 8, 2009 – 37th ANNUAL FOOTBALL SUNDAY

Las Palmas Community Church will host their annual event for both Coachella Valley High School Arabs and Indio High School Rajahs.  The event is held the Sunday prior to the big “Bell Game” and will begin at 10 a.m. at 47-783 Monroe Street, in Indio (near the Monroe and Ave 48 intersection).  There will be special music by Kenny Meier of Palm Desert, guest speaker Caleb Gervin, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a continental breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Lunch will also be served after the service. 

 

SAY "CHEESECAKE" TO HELP THE WEST SHORES HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA CLUB

Cheesecake and Cookie Dough Catalog orders will be accepted November 9 thru December 5, 2009. Catalogs are available from Sam Messler, Teacher, by calling the school 760-394-4331 or via email samuel.messler@cvusd.us. Products will be available for pickup at WSHS December 15, after 1 p.m. or ask for possible delivery. The form of payment will be exact cash or checks made payable to West Shores High School. SATURDAY, November 14, 2009 – FLYING DOCTORS and c. v. medical volunteers to hold their annuaL healthcare clinic

This is a great opportunity for families to get their check-ups and medical attention they need; medical exams, dental treatments, vision exam and glasses, mammograms, diabetic screening, blood pressure check, CPR class in Spanish and chiropractic services, as well as a resource fair.  Free child care will be provided.  The event is also made possible by CVUSD’s School Readiness Program, Coachella Valley High School and co-sponsors: C.V. Medical Volunteers, Signature Flight Support at Jacqueline Cochrane Regional Airport; Indian Palms Country Club, Ciro’s Restaurant; La Fiesta Rental; Coachella Valley Rotary Club; John F. Kennedy Hospital; La Poderosa; KESQ; KUNA Telemundo; Yosemite Waters; Western Growers; Borrego Community Health Foundation; Desert Women for Equality Program, Program Dulce, CSEA, CVTA.

Saturday, November 21, 2009 – Inaugural Literacy Festival at Coachella Library

The Riverside County Library System, First 5 Riverside County Children and Families Commission, and Coachella Valley Literacy Network, UCR – Palm Desert will host this event with guest of honor Juan Felipe Herrera, award winning author, distinguished poet, UCR Creative Writing professor and spell-binding storyteller.  The festival is intended to encourage and inspire youth and community members to discover the countless opportunities and benefits that can be attained through reading.  There will be free books and cultural entertainment for all attendees.  For more information please contact Cristina Gregorio at (760) 834-0954.
