Starving for Our DREAM:

Undocumented Students and Allies Declare Hunger Strike

San Antonio--With more than 20 anti-immigrant bills pre-filed in the
state legislature in less than forty-eight hours, Texas immigrant
youth call for immediate action on the federal DREAM Act. The student
organization, DREAM Act NOW! at UTSA, is declaring a Hunger Strike as
a wake up call for national leadership to step in and pass the DREAM
Act in the lame duck session. The group is urging all Texas supporters
to write and call Senator Kay Baily Hutchison and Senate Majority
leader Harry Reid to request their support. The Hunger Strike days
will include, a day of collaboration with ROTC members in a Veteran’s
Day rally in support of undocumented youth wanting to join the Armed
Forces and a series of vigils including “Vigil for Dead Dreams” in
memory of DREAM Act eligible youth who have been deported.

“As a Latino community and homegrown talent we feel under attack by
these anti-immigrant forces” said Pamela Resendiz, Co-founder of DREAM
Act NOW! “We must speak out through this Hunger Strike and urge our
university and our community to stand with us and fight for
legislation that is based on hard work, education, and service.”

“We are calling for Senator Hutchison’s reasonable voice to step in
and pass the DREAM Act in the lame duck session before the shrill
paranoia of the Tea Party purges the prosperity and unity of our state
just as they did her campaign during the primaries” said Benita Veliz,
member of DREAM Act NOW!

DREAM Act NOW! at UTSA is a student organization composed of immigrant
youth and their allies committed to promoting passage of the DREAM
Act. The DREAM Act is a federal bipartisan legislation that would
allow for an earned opportunity for undocumented youth to adjust their
immigration status if they have been in the U.S. before the age of
sixteen, have maintained good moral character and pursue two years of
higher education or two years in the Armed Forces. The legislation
would only offer relief to immigrant youth who have been in the United
States five years prior to the legislation being enacted.
