There are great singers in the world, and amazing actors, but should some actors sing?  Should some singers act?  Some stars are good at both, but some, however, should just stick with the talents that made them famous.

            There are some people in today’s entertainment that are a triple threat.  A triple threat is someone who can dance, sing and act.  A great example of this would be Beyonce Knowles.  Knowles first got her start in an all-girl singing group, Destiny’s Child.  Now Knowles is a solo artist who has had much success.  She has also acted in the movie Dream Girls and most recently in the movie “Obsessed.”

            In “Obsessed”, Knowles does a great job of portraying a suspicious and strong wife who ultimately has to fight for her husband against his assistant, played by Ali Larter, who has been stalking him.  Knowles did a fantastic job playing the character and was very believable.

            Great examples of singers who do an amazing job are Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, and Alicia Keys.  Latifah had a short singing career but now has been in many movies and is a spokesperson for Cover Girl Makeup.  Keys has had a great singing career and has an amazing voice, while Hudson, who was on American Idol has started to branch out into acting and won a Oscar for “Dream Girls”, a movie she stared in with Knowles.                        

Latifah, Hudson, and Keys all starred in the movie “The Secret life of Bees” with Dakota Fanning.  This movie takes place in 1964 and is a touching story about a girl who runs away, played by Fanning, with a woman that worked for her family, Hudson.  They end up living with Keys and Latifah’s characters making honey.  It sounds simple but the movie teaches some good life lessons and gives insight into segregation and racism in the 1960’s.  All three women did an amazing job and made there characters believable and relatable.

            There are other people in the singing world who attempt to act.  Some singers fall flat, while others do a great job.  Knowles, Hudson, Keys and Latifah are great example of singers who have improved and expanded their careers through acting.  However there are some singers who do not transfer over to the big screen as easily.

            Britney Spears has been a pop star since she was sixteen.  Spears is a talented singer and performer and, despite some issues in her personal life over the past few years, she has made a comeback.  She has had many hit songs and highlights in her career, but one low point in her career was the movie “Crossroads” in 2002.

            It was a movie Spears starred in about three childhood best friends taking a trip across the country where they find themselves and renew their friendship.  It was just another typical teen movie with bad acting and a bad plot.

            Singers are not the only people that try to test out other career choices.  There are some actresses and actors in Hollywood that decide to try a career in singing.

            A bad example of actresses and actors trying to sing would be Lindsay Lohan.  Her first big movie role was in 1998 where she played twins in “The Parent Trap.”  She was a child star after that and continued to act.  A little later on in her career she tried a singing career.  However, it did not last long and she only had one or two popular songs. 

She later recorded a song for her movie, “Herby Fully Loaded,” that was supposed to be played during a race scene.  Her song ended up being played during the credits and Lohan got so upset that she stormed out of the theater.  I think that she should have been more focused on what she was good at; her performance in the movie, instead of her one song.

Scarlett Johanson is a great actress who has appeared in many movies.  She recently recorded a CD and it was out in stores.  I honestly have never heard a song from it or heard much about it since its release.  I think that speaks for itself and it must not be good.

I think that some actors or singers can definitely have careers in both the acting and singing world, but it is not for everyone.  For some people it would be better if they did not quit their day jobs and stuck with what they knew they were good at.  I feel like people can try to do both, but should make sure they are actually truly talented at whatever they try before they put a lot of effort in it.  I know I would rather know I was not the best or was not gifted at something before putting it out there and embarrassing myself on a global scale.
