President Barack Obama gave a speech broadcast to the students of America, Sept.8, outside of Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA. The speech was about having educational responsibility in school.
“I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do, I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down; don't let your family or your country down. Most of all, don't let yourself down,” said Obama.
Some schools did not play the speech, citing that the announcement was made too late and teachers already had lessons planned as a reason. Although parents decided what their children watched, this speech spiked controversy with parents, saying that the president was pushing a political agenda onto students. Parent reactions were out of control. If they did not want their children to watch all they had to do was simply check “no” on the slip.
There is no harm in having the President boost the student’s morale when it comes to academic excellence or, more importantly, America’s future. Why is it that when others speak to students about staying in school it is a “great opportunity,” but when our president chooses to address them, many people oppose?
"Mr. President, stay away from our kids,” was written on a protester’s poster outside Wakefield High where Obama spoke.
Other presidents, such as Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, gave speeches to students before, but when Obama made his speech, he was accused of trying to promote his policies. Florida Republican Party chairman, Jim Greer, called the speech an attempt to "spread President Obama's socialist ideology."
Obama spoke to thousands of students only to tell them that they can reach their goals as long as they try. He gave many examples of students who encountered hardships along the way of success, including himself. The speech was simple, inspirational and eye-opening.
In no way, was Obama trying to get across any agenda. Encouraging students to stay in school and reach their goals should be enforced even more since the drop-out rate has not lowered much recently. Encouraging students to fulfill their responsibility is a crucial point in determining America’s future.
