Every award show has its special moment, but this year at the Video Music Awards (VMA), Sept. 13, Kanye West had an exceptionally distasteful reaction to Taylor Swift’s award.

            Swift was awarded “Best Female Video,” beating Beyonce, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga and P!nk. Swift went up to the stage to accept her award and was mid-sentence when West ran up to the stage, grabbed the microphone and started his own speech.

            “Yo Taylor. I’m really happy for you. I’ma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time,” said West.

            In an extremely rude manner, West then proceeded to shrug his shoulders and get off the stage. He paid no consideration to Swift or her feelings and must think he did something great by doing that. It was an idiotic move on his part. Swift was appalled at West’s opinion, and could not finish her acceptance speech to thank her fans. She stood on stage taken aback at what West had just said and was then escorted off stage. Beyonce had a look of utter shock on her face.

            Swift was nervous, because she then had to stand up on stage and perform in front of the entire VMA audience after West told her she should not have won the award. She performed, despite her bewilderment. Although, she did not have much time to recover from the shock she was in, Swift still had an amazing performance.

            After her performance, Swift was instructed to stay near the stage while she watched Beyonce win the award for “Video of the Year.” Beyonce then invited Swift to come on stage and have a second shot at accepting her award. It was an extremely kind gesture and greatly appreciated by Swift.

            ““[I remember] I was up for my first MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. So I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment,” said Beyonce.

            Although this event was unkind and unexpected, there are now jokes made about it such as “When will Kanye interrupt you?” quizzes on Facebook. Such quizzes give a bit of comedic relief to the astonishing reaction he had. It is possible to find humor in the situation, but it is still astounding that West had the nerve to insult Swift in front of so many people. His actions were shocking and he should be reprimanded for what he did.

            West made public apologies on his website before apologizing to Swift personally. Swift did not receive a personal apology from West until three days after the awards.
