Students at Athens Drive High School have been learning in the same classes, whether they may be an academic or honors student.
“I think that the mixing of honors and academic classes was to try to see of test scores will rise and it also worked out due to scheduling issues,” said Ken Davenport, U.S. History Teacher.
Some of the students are being taught the same material at the same level, but are given different tests.
“I think if they are learning the same material and at the same pace, then they should have the same tests,” said Leila Sajdieh, sophomore.
Although some teachers assign honors and academic students the same work, they use a different grading scale which in the end affects their Grade Point Averages (GPA’s).
“I honestly think that the mixing of classes may help some students, but it isn’t going to successfully aid the needs of both honors and academic students,” said Doha Hindi, Freshman.
“Honors Students are self motivating and want to challenge themselves, but if they want to get behind they will,” said Davenport.
Students at ADHS choose their own classes before the beginning of every school year. Teachers also get to recommend what classes their students should take.
“I think the fact that we choose if we want to be placed in an honors class has helped many students and the teachers’ recommendations could make them feel better about themselves and reach higher goals,” said Sajdieh.
