Seventh Annual Jaguar Invitational

By: Daria Al Khalidi                                                                                                Athens Drive men’s track team took home first place at the seventh annual Jaguar Invitational on March 10 for the first time.                                                                                                The high schools competing were Athens Drive, Leesville, Chapel Hill, Millbrook and West Johnston. Points were awarded to each of the winners for each division. In the end the points were added up and the winning school was announced.

“Athens won for the first time in school history; it was a big accomplishment for the school and the track team. We worked really hard to get there. Our new head coach, Coach Lyles, is a great guy and makes us compete,” said Adrien King, senior.

The schools competed in various track and field events such as relays, dashes, long jumps, high jumps, hurdles, shot puts, triple jumps and pole vaulting.

“I ran the 4x2 and the medley relay and came in first place in the medley relay, and second place in the 4x2 also. We all worked really hard so I’m happy that we won,” said Dandre Washington, senior.

All of the athletes that won first place in their event received a medal. Athens received the seventh Jaguar Invitational trophy for first place.

Millbrook came in second place, West Johnston in third, Chapel Hill in fourth and Leesville in fifth. Athens Drive girl’s track team also competed in the Jaguar Invitational and came in fifth place.

Athens men track team scores totaled to 153 points, securing their win. Millbrook had 137 points, West Johnston had 109, Chapel Hill had 92, and Leesville had 75.

Athens girls track team scores totaled to 73 points. Leesville had 94, Chapel Hill had 106, West Johnston had 135 and Millbrook had 172.

“The Jaguar Invitational is for any school that wants to participate. Up to eight schools can participate in the Jaguar Invitational,” said Doug Perry, senior.

Athens will be holding the Jaguar Invitational next year too, with perhaps more schools attending. Athens 2012 men’s track team will never forget the feeling of winning that first place trophy, knowing they made Athens history.
