As thousands of tree huggers spend their days trying to convince the world to go green, I am beginning to understand why people are not following through with it. People are simply intimidated by the high price tags that often come with eco-friendly items. For example, when I looked into buying a new 2009 Hybrid Ford Escape, the first thing I noticed was the enormous difference in price from the original 2009 Ford Escape. The starting price of the Hybrid is approximately $9,000 more than the regular model. After seeing the price, I was no longer concerned about global warming or air pollution. Needless to say, I did not decide to purchase the Hybrid.
When I look into buying something, I always compare the prices of different brands. Many people do this as well, and that is when their quest to save the world ends. Why should I pay an extra $9,000 to save the world, when I could save that money and go on with my life? Several people, including myself, fail to realize the rewards down the road. We get so caught up in the price that we have to pay right now, that we do not consider the physical harm that we will have to live with in a few years.
Aside from the concern of a healthy environment, there is one reason why everyone should go green. It has been proven that Hybrid cars and LED lights actually save you money. With the continuous inflation of gas prices, a Hybrid car will save you money at the pump. You may have to invest more money into these items upfront, but over time you will end up with more cash. So if money is the real reason why people do not invest in Hybrid cars or special lighting for their kitchen, then they certainly are doing the wrong thing. If you want to save money and the environment, take one easy step and go green.
