Top Olympic athlete and icon of the American people, Michael Phelps, openly admitted to some bad behavior and horrible judgment after a photo of him taking a hit from a marijuana bong.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

The picture is said to have been taken during a house party while Michael Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina. During the trip, he graced the University’s football crowd with his presence. He received a standing ovation and respect from everyone in the stadium.

The good news for Phelps is that he has never been tested positive of using illegal drug enhancers and this mistake will have no effect on the eight gold medals he won at the Olympics.

The bad news for Phelps is he now has a lot of embarrassed sponsors that are rethinking their previous deals they made with the swimmer.

Phelps is a role model for all, and has now had a wake up call. He is now well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that comes with setting a positive example for others, especially young people.

Phelps made a huge mistake and will pay for it from his sponsors for sure. However, he learned his lesson we can be confident that Phelps will consistently set the type of example we all expect to see from a great Olympic champion.
