The sight of new students dressed in new clothes filled the halls for the first day of school in August. With coated emotions of fear and excitement, freshmen walked through the double red doors for what would be their first day of high school. Anxiously waiting and preparing for the worst, they were on their way to realizing that this school isn’t as scary as they expected.
As freshmen, many think it will be like middle school, but there are still a few who know it’ll be way different. The same few who couldn’t get any bit of sleep the night before and the one’s who planned out their first week outfits days ahead of time.
“Middle school was different because it was a lot smaller, and I wasn’t afraid of getting lost. In high school I was,” freshman Christine Leazar said.
Another difference is the time of having to wake up. Raiders have to get up early, be at school and ready to start their day at 7:25 in the morning rather than starting past 8:30 in some middle schools.
“It left me really sleepy,” freshman Rachel Gates said. “I wished I could go back to sleep.”
Being the youngest students in the school many fear that the things they were picked on for would stick in high school now that there were older and much bigger students.
“I’ve always been teased about my size and everything so I was just kind of intimidated,” Leazar said.
On the bright side, some freshmen were eager to get to school and energized the morning before school started. They didn’t worry about what to wear and they had no fears of being small fish in a big sea.
“I knew a lot of people that go here so I was ready for school. I woke up at 5:30 in the morning and I didn’t have any fears about starting my new school,” freshman Andre Fuller said.
The school offers a wide variety of clubs and organizations. But there aren’t many that are aware of the success one can achieve and the fun one can have. The school also offers several sports and athletics.
“I just don’t like clubs. I don’t want to have to come in before or after school, and I am already involved in a sport outside of school,” freshman Leo Morrow said.
After all the first day jitters, the poorly given introductions of stating your first and last name nervously, and filling out what seems like 2,000 index cards, freshmen soon realize that high school isn’t bad at all, and that there’s nothing to be afraid of.
