This year the student council has put a lot of energy into increasing their community service participation. Not only does student council sponsor activities and functions for the school community but it also tries when possible to give back to the general community. Recently our student council has teamed up with Deb Parker, a member of a local rescue crew, to collect at least one hundred comfortable outfits for disaster relief victims. The idea for this project came as a result of last years flooding where many families in Greenfield were displaced and were sheltered here at the high school. Many people had only the clothes on their backs and nothing else because they had lost everything in the flood. In the event that something like this were to happen again at least one hundred people will have warm, dry clothes to put on. On Tuesday, December 5, 2006 members of the student council got together at The Laundry located on Federal Street to wash the donated clothes. When all of the clothes had been washed they were separated into sizes and gender. Each package contained the items listed below plus a note signed by the packager to personalize it. Student Council is not limited to collecting clothing for this community service; they are also collecting blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and washcloths. Although we have already washed a ton of clothes we still need a lot of pants and brand new socks and underwear to complete the packets. As always 100 outfits is just a goal, it’s always great to exceed a set goal.

GHS Student Council Shelter Clothes Project

Purpose: To prepare “warm and comfy clothing kits” for persons brought into the Greenfield Public Schools for overnight shelter during emergencies (floods, blizzards, etc.) Each kit will contain one complete set of clothing for a person who is wet and cold. All of the outerwear should be used clothing in excellent condition – a set of clothes YOU would feel OK about wearing in public. (Fashion a moot point.) All of the underwear should be new.

Each package will contain:

One pair draw-string or elastic-waist flannel, polar fleece, or ‘sweat’ pants (NO JEANS please)

One long sleeve shirt (turtle neck, long-sleeved polo, polar fleece, long-sleeve T, or sweat shirt)

One T-shirt for men and boys; one “bra camisole” for women or a girl’s T for you young girls. Infants and toddlers need T’s or onesies with the snaps at the crotch.

One pair of underpants for adult or child; two disposable diapers of the correct size for a baby or a toddler

One pair of thick warm socks (they may not have shoes; these should be warm enough to act as slipper socks.)

Our experience has been that all of the warm and comfy outerwear can be found among your own family members or purchased very reasonably at a Salvation Army; remember to try to put together an outfit that looks as nice and matching as possible. (It may be YOU who needs to be sheltered)

We need to have enough clothing to shelter at least 100 people, male and female, children and adults. To this end, we are asking for 4 sets of each size below.

Men S, L, XL 2X and 3X (20 sets for men)

Boys S, M, L XL (16 sets for boys)

Women S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X (20 sets for women)

Girls S, M, L, XL (16 sets for girls)

Babies 9-12 Months x 5 (25 baby/toddler sets in all)

18-24 months x 5

Toddlers 2T x 5

3T x 5

4T x 5

We have already collected a lot of clothing but we still need a lot of sweat pants and baby

and toddler clothing. Any donations of clothing or money to buy new underwear are

welcome. All donations can be brought to Mrs. Lawrence in guidance. A date to wash

incoming clothes has not yet been set.
