Self-expression, or the “how to” of showing your true self to the world, can take many forms. Some of the major ways include, clothing, hairstyles, make-up, body art and body piercing. For example, someone that has blue or pink hair is expressing himself or herself through color. Someone who dresses somewhat out of the ordinary is expressing his or her true self through clothing.

Self-expression can manifest itself in more than just your personal appearance. It can show up in the types of art that you like (or don’t like). Things like drawing, painting, writing poetry or short stories, and listening to music are all excellent ways to express your inner-self.

Some people choose to vent their anger, sadness, happiness, or pain and joy by writing or drawing, which are wonderful forms of self-expression. Through self-expression you are learning how to deal with your emotions in a constructive and not destructive way.

No matter who you are or where you are in your particular stage of life, there is some type of creative self-expression just waiting to burst out of its shell deep inside you. Take some time to explore your inner-self and see what develops.
