It’s been 9 years since America was attacked. On September 9, 2001 it was a fine morning in many places the world. At 8:48 AM. Eastern Time, The World Trade Center had been attacked. American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of The World Trade Center. Not even fifteen minutes later United Airlines Flight 175 crashes into the south tower. At 9:40 AM American Airline flight 77 crashed into the western wall of the Pentagon.
A teacher here at Cesar Chavez, Mr. Jonathan Whitford, born in Lodi, CA. January 26, 1984, tells us about his knowledge of the 9/11 incident. He was only getting ready to go to school and have a normal day, as a senior at Galt High School when 9/11 occurred. “We took it as a joke at first, but then we realized that it was very serious…After that we talked about it in every one of our classes.”
Until this day we still say that 9/11 has changed American history. Mr. Whitford says, “Yes, because we now live in a post 9/11 America. Everything we do, everything we say left us in fear because of 9/11.” More than 3,000 people died on 9/11, including firefighters, police men, etc. This cause has brought fear to Americans today, imagine having to loose that many people in lest than 2 hours.
To most Americans this day means a lot to them, yet some weren’t as affected like others were. Those who will never forget this day are the ones who were there or near when this happened. Family members who lost their loved ones won’t forget this day. Nor those who eye witnessed the whole scene. “It really doesn’t mean as much to me as it does to people in the east. I believe it should be remembered but to me it has no significance, because I didn’t know anyone in there,” says Mr. Whitford.
It’s believed that Osama Bin Laden was the one behind it all. “I think this happened because of religious beliefs,” Jonathan Whitford tells us, “I believe plenty of people were behind 9/11 but Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind of it all.” A Mosque is being built only blocks down The World Trade Center site, Mr. Whitford was asked how he felt about it he told us “I don’t think ALL Islamic people had everything to do with 9/11, not allowing them to do so is discrimination.” Many American’s are still opposing to this new building being built they feel it’s disrespect to our country.
Mr. Whitford finishes with, “9/11 is a day we need to learn from, and accept not to judge people based on their faith and nationality, but I feel we need to move on, still remember but move on from it.”
