Beef versus salad. Most people would pick beef. Some others just don’t like beef and would choose salad. They could eat beef if all the salads were gone, but some people are vegetarians and don’t eat meat.

Our school has a salad option for lunch on most days, but some days, the salads have meat-cut up chicken patties, chicken nuggets, cold ham and turkey, or something else-on top of them. There are few salads put out in the lunch line, anyway. If a few non-vegetarians choose to eat salads rather than the hot lunch option, all the salads may be long gone before the few vegetarians get the chance to grab them.

“The only seeming choice for vegetarians on any regular basis would be the taco chips and a bag of cheese,” said vegetarian and art teacher Mr. Mark Ober. “There should be an alternative entrée, for those interested, to the main lunch.”

Vegetarians could also buy nachos and cheese or salsa, but nachos are not very filling. They are also unhealthy if eaten too often. Vegetarians would get tired of that option very fast. They could also buy a combination of extras and a drink, but again, that option is not exactly healthy. It may also cost more, in the right combination.

“I either have to pick the meat out of the school lunch or pack my own lunch,” said vegetarian Cayla Haugli, senior. “ It’s a pain and means I have to spend most of the lunch period making sure I haven’t missed any meat.”
