The Internet expands everyday and more as more people begin to log on, look up, and chat online. These have become only some of the many ways that people use the Internet. Many people have discovered the advantages of the Internet, yet many people also have become aware of its possibly disturbing atmosphere and danger if not used correctly. Two of these possibly dangerous sites, Facebook and myspace, show up as two prime examples of Internet links that people use excessively all around the world. Either loved or hated these sites have become a major part of the world and how it communicates. Most people put their lives, real or imaginary, online by using these sites. These two sites create fear for many watchful and protective parents, guardians and concerned people for the safety of friends or family; however, theses sites should not be feared if the users are safe and smart with what how they use these sites. Facebook and myspace should not be thought of as completely safe sites. They have indeed proven themselves to be dangerous, right? Wrong! The actual sites appear as the danger, when in fact; the people who are on them are the ones of whom people should be cautious. These sites have become something we need to be aware of and some argue that these sites are the doorways that bad people use to get a hold of their victims. This argument seems valid; yet, people must also remember that any public place can also be dangerous. With the changing world, the Internet is a new public place, like a park perhaps, and just like a child might not be allowed to a public park down the street, a child might also not be allowed on a site like facebook or myspace. These sites could get compared to many other things that have been around much longer. For example a common shopping mall. Here people of all ages gather to shop, eat, and spend their days. Places like a common shopping mall can be just as much as a trap of bad people as Facebook or myspace and just as in these common places a person must be careful for bad people, but should the fear of bad people keep others from using these sites that could be beneficial to them? Positive aspects to the sites, like facebook and myspace, have become so vast that they almost cancel out the bad ones. For example these sites allow people of all ages to store photos (which they can set to private and choose who they want to see them), talk to friends who live close or away without running up the phone or text bill, see what events are happening, and join groups. These examples show only some of the many different things that people can do on sites like facebook and myspace. While doing these things people must be aware that in fact bad people do reside in the world and people should be cautious (perhaps by not putting out a lot of information about themselves) of them. In conclusion sites like facebook and myspace should not be looked upon with fear but caution and not be banned from use. If a person knows something about the evils and danger of the world online then there should be no reason for avoiding sites like facebook and myspace. These sites were made for good, like public parks or malls, and yes-bad people can corrupt their images, yet, that does not mean people should live their lives in fear by avoiding possible useful things created for their use and convenience. (Do not use excessively)
