The French class hard at work. The students were only allowed to speak in French during their final exam. - Jordyn Perry

The food of the French has been savored by the world for generations. Their breath-taking breads, delectable deserts and perfect pastries have ranked them near the top of the cuisine pyramid for a long while, and on the first and second of May, Danville High School’s AP French class attempted to reach that standard of taste-based excellence.

This year, rather than taking on a traditional final exam, the AP French students had the assignment to cook one French dish.

This practical, but previously unheard of idea was playing on the combination of using French ingredients, learning more about French cuisine and refining the students’ vocabularies in restaurant-based terms.

The students’ language skills were adequately tested as they put on what senior Drew Lane describes as an "Iron Chef" show. In the video the students created, they showed off the foods that they had created while speaking about them (and how they created them) in French.

Views from students outside of the class are mixed on the subject. Senior Cheyenne Bolin, a member of the AP Spanish class, immediately exclaimed, "I want to cook for my final!" However, senior Michaela Hawkins said, "I think it’s an awesome idea, but I kind of feel like they’re not putting focus on what they learned all year."
