At the beginning of the Spring Semester a new form of news-delivery has been added to El Camino’s daily announcements. The new TV announcements produced by the Video Arts class taught by Ms. Guthier are run every Friday in place of the usual P.A. announcements.
However, Video Arts does not only revolve around news broadcast, Ms. Guthier’s second period class is dedicated to students who switch off every week to perfect these announcements. This class consists of groups of students that take turns producing the different aspects of the program. Each week one group produces news; another makes video art, such as commercials, digital life story projects, creative film, informational videos, and documentaries. Ms. Guthier explained, “This class is designed to be an art class not just news broadcast. I am working to get this course approved by CSU as a performing arts elective.”
Since the TV announcements need to be broadcast at the end of each week, this puts a lot of pressure on the students creating the project. “One time we had to stay at school till 7 o’ clock, and another time we had to put the camera in front of the laptop and press play to broadcast the news.” Gerard Enriquez said.
After the school has viewed the newly added media they all have different opinions on the content as well as the overall setup. “We try to please everyone but it’s not possible. Some people didn’t like the introduction so we changed it right away.” Nathan Sihakom said
“T.V. Announcements benefit the school because people actually pay attention to them as opposed to the P.A. announcements.” Sihakom added.
