Public Display of Affection rule gone too far?: Teachers busted in violation of new PDA crackdown

Public Display of Affection, otherwise known as PDA, has been strictly limited at El Camino High School. Students are discouraged from touching each other inappropriately, hugging, holding hands, or participating in “extreme kissing.” These rules not only affect students but have been also extended to certain teachers as well.

Recently, students have started the rumor that Art teachers and married couple Ms. Bowman and Mr. Porter have been participating in “extreme kissing” around the school campus. Students have long suspected that the couple may be meeting for secret rendezvous between Porter’s second period prep. and Bowman’s third period prep. These rumors were confirmed when Mr. Turkis, returning to his classroom from a bathroom break, found Bowman and Porter holding hands and gazing lovingly into each others eyes in the auto shop parking lot. “I felt sick to my stomach,” Turkis said. “I mean, get a room! Their affection and cuteness was just too much for me. I’m going to have to go wash out my eyes.”

Although no administrator had ever caught the two lovebirds in the act, they were called into Mr. Scatena’s office under the reason of “suspected PDA” and issued three weekends of Saturday school each on alternating weekends so that, “we can’t have those two in the same room as each other. They might hug and we can’t have a repeat of such behavior. Hopefully Saturday school will cure them of their hopeless addiction to love,” Scatena said.

Although the administration stated that PDA cannot be expressed in school, the couple thought the rule was generally aimed towards the students. They had not the slightest clue that teachers are subject to discipline as well. Students began to doubt the fairness of the administration and asked, “Why can’t we do it, if teachers can do it?” senior Jessica Thiragirayuta said.

When asked about how she felt about being caught, Bowman replied, “I am so embarrassed.” Porter had a more liberal response to the rule, “It’s okay if students hug and hold hands, just as long as they don’t eat each other,” Porter said.

Administration is now reconsidering the strict rules cast on campus. The rule may be revised to allow PDA on campus as long as no babies are produced as a result of the PDA. Unfortunately for Bowman and Porter they may be receiving more Saturday school for being in violation of this rule as well.
