The Spanaway Lake track team has come a long way this season considering all the criticism and challenges thrown their way. The team’s success reflects on the fact that they have a positive attitude and they make it a point not to blame each other for personal faults. Even though the team is smaller this year, they have received a lot of recognition for their hard work and dedication.

The track team placed second in the Sentinel Classic beating competitive teams such as Curtis, Enumclaw, Bethel and Graham Kapowsin. This year the Boy’s 4 x 1 team has accomplished a lot, winning at almost every event. Marvin Evans, Chris Pierce, Jedadiah Bickham and Julian McCrann were very proud when they heard that they qualified for districts. They didn’t have any problems communicating because they have known each other since the 10th grade. “We’re in love and we support each other, “says Bickham.

The girl’s team has lived up to expectations, since they also qualified for districts. Britteny Hayes, Andee Robison, Tiffani Wilson, and Brittany Young have worked hard to get where they are. It’s a big accomplishment considering the girl’s 4 by 1 hasn’t gone as far as districts in 15 years. Both teams faced tough competitions at district but they didn’t qualify for state. However the boy’s 4 x 4 did make it to state. Roger Clark, Chris Pierce, Chaphen Johnson and Aaron Fowler placed 13th with a time of 3:28:34. Bickham, Johnson and Young, the only girl at state; also qualified for the high jump.

Another highlight of the season was when junior Brittany Young jumped 5’3 breaking the girl’s high jump record, which has been in Spanaway history for 23 years. “It’s cool that people know about it, I guess,” she says. The seniors aren’t leaving disappointed because most of them have been offered scholarships or like Bickham, they’ve been recruited. “They had as much fun as they worked, “says Coach Adams.
