Principal Mark Griffon celebrates with his Lone Star Cup helmet
“The Lone Star Cup is an award given out by the state for the top school in each class,” Principal Mark Griffon said. “Points are received by UIL Academic and Athletic Team events.”

Point contributors include State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls and Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, One Act Play, State Academic Meet, Track & Field, Softball and Baseball.

“I am proud of all of them. We had to have everyone’s points. The One Act Play and Academic team did something that most schools can only dream about and that is win every point that they could win,” Dr. Myrlene Kennedy said. “I can’t forget the football team that started the ball rolling when they advanced to the state semifinals and the baseball team that contributed the final round points when they advanced to the region semifinals.”

FHS scored a total of 92 points while the second place team; Waco Midway, scored a total of 90 points.

“Winning the Cup is very hard to do,” Griffon said. “A great achievement for FHS.”

In order to score, a team must either win the district championship or win a playoff game.

“If you study how the points are earned, you know that if just one group failed to advance to the next level we would have been in a runner up spot again,” Dr. Kennedy said. “You never really know how important the points you earn are until the end.”

Since the Cup’s beginning about ten years ago, Friendswood has placed second several times. This year was the first year that FHS won The Lone Star.

“It is the icing on the cake,” Dr. Kennedy said. “We have worked for it every year it has been in existence.”

FHS will be presented with The Lone Star Cup at the first home game of the season against Nederland, Friday, September 18.
