As a new girl’s basketball season starts, the pressure is on everyone. The season is starting with a twist; a new coach, with new goals.
Girls Coach, Chris Bentley came to our school from Aransas and is hoping he will have a positive effect on the girls, lead them to district or better yet, a win in the play–offs.
Many people have faith in the girls.” The girls can make it and win district but it would be a big leap considering the girls haven’t won district since 1994 and the time before that was 1959,” Coach Groseclose said
The pressure is going to be tense but the girls are ready to break the forty year interval and make district this year.
Coach Groseclose is not the only one who believes in them. Coach Bentley has his expectations high and knows they can make it. His plans for the team are “to reach and have success in the play-offs. With a lot of fundamental work, the girls working to their full capability,” he knows they have a shot.
The first game of the year has already happened but to those of you who thought they couldn’t do it the 48 to 43 win against Calallen “was a good indication of how the season will go” Coach Bentley said.
Things are looking up for all teams not just the varsity. The freshman basketball team is “working extremely hard” Coach Howell said. They are working to win games even with “missing a few main players” she said and she also has “high hopes for them this years.”
Coach Reyes has had some team players move up and has had some improve. She has welcomed some of this years’ freshman, and has accepted last year’s freshman team players.
“My expectations are always high; I try to get the most out of each individual,” Coach Reyes said.
She is working hard with her team in hopes of raising the bar from last year’s team.
”I think last years team did a good job and this year’s team will do just as good and even better,” she said
Even though for some people, it is their first year here, and for others it’s there last, they couldn’t be happier for this season of basketball.
“I feel a little bit nervous but with the support of my team I also feel very excited!” Taylor Patek said
She is a new student this year at RFHS, and she is also the only freshman on the Varsity team. She is pumped and ready to step onto the court
“My first thoughts when I step onto the court are what it takes to beat the other team,” She said.
Being a freshman to this school she is noticing differences from her middle school games.
“The game now is much faster and intense. I can’t get away with some things as I once had in the eight grade.”
Like everyone else Taylor has her hopes high for her team “I hope we can make it all the way to the regional tournament.”
