“ I think it’s an enjoyable day for the students and it gives them a chance to experience as much foreign culture as they can in a regular classroom situation,” said Carol Kirkwood.

This comment was made regarding the Feb 16 International Day for students in which Kirkwood’s French classes joined Dave Miller’s German classes, Brad Edmunds and Diane Chamberlain’s Spanish classes for International Day.

First, the students wrote down eight words of each language; Spanish, German, and French, onto their “passport.” Students then traveled between the three classes and asked other students of that class to teach them how to pronounce and say each of those foreign words. Once students felt they had successfully mastered the words, they went before one of the teachers to have them tested. If the students pronounced all of the eight words correctly, then their passport got stamped. When they have all three countries stamped, they are allowed to go and eat the food that the different classes brought.

“ International Day was fun, and it was good to experience different food and languages from all the different countries. I was pretty hungry that day, so it was very convenient,” commented Jesse Mitros, a student in Chamberlain’s Spanish 3 class.

The purpose of International Day was to help the students learn and experience a little bit of other languages and to help the students become aware of the differences between the countries.
