The Owl Press at Open Campus High School in Virginia Beach, VA recently published a story entitled “Students Triumph Over Faculty” that is about a recent basketball game that took place between the students and faculty members. The game was much like the game that will take place in our SEB when our intramural champion is crowned, accept it was used to raise money for the school. Overall they raised almost $300. Here is a link to the story: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/va/virginiabeach/opencampus/article.cfm?eid=5921&aid=89215

The Talon, from Sandra Day O’Connor High School and the Copper Chronicle from Bisbee High School, both in Arizona, display stories pertaining to their standards test called AIMS, which stands for Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards. The test is a lot like the Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students, or PAWS. Links to the articles are below. The first article is a descriptive story, telling exactly how the AIMS works and how it is incorporated into the Arizona curriculum. The second story shows flaws that students from Sandra Day O’Connor High School have found. Much like many students at LHS, they feel overqualified for the test. The RamPage from Desert Miracle High School in Thermal, CA has a rather interesting and very well written story about an illegal sewage drain that was placed into an already decreasingly attractive sea nearby their school. Venessa Inclan’s story, entitled “Salton Sea Becomes an Attractive Sewage Dump,” can be found here: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/thermal/dmhs/article.cfm?eid=8205&aid=124827

The Arapahoe Herald from Arapahoe High School in Centennial, CO, our close neighbor, published a story this month called “LPS time study produces calendar changes.” The story explains that the school board in their county has introduced a new schedule that allows time on eight to ten Wednesdays per school year to be taken out of the day and given to teachers. The time is much like our Student Enrichment Block, or SEB, accept that it will be given to teachers for them to analyze students and work with other teachers on curriculum plans and other important issues. The story can be found at this link: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/co/centennial/ahs/article.cfm?eid=8046&aid=126346

The Switch, at Island School in Lihue, HI has an article this April dealing with a recent law enforced in the entire state of Hawaii that restricts smoking within 20 feet of doorways as well as “prohibits lighting up in bars, in workplaces, and from the airplane cabins to the curb at airports.” This law reflects a law instated in Laramie that makes it illegal for anyone to smoke in any business. Read Jena Smalling’s story, called “Hawai’i up in smoke” at this link: http://my.highschooljournalism.org/hi/lihue/island/article.cfm?eid=7662&aid=115526
