LHS helps LHS families

Sixty-four LHS families in need benefited from the Student Council food drive, Multicultural's “Make a Change" money drive and hams, turkeys and gift certificates donated by faculty and staff.

Of these 64 families, 53 accepted a food basket that included either a ham or turkey. Eighty-one LHS students from these 64 families also received a gift certificate from a Laramie business.

The Holiday Helpers committee that was co-chaired by counselor Heather Turpen and social worker Carla Koegen organized and coordinated this annual event. The committee is made up of faculty and staff members.

According to Turpen, "Holiday Helpers benefits families who may be struggling because of a lost job, disabilities or because of other hardships such as job changes." She added, "Student names are given to the committee by faculty and staff members. This program has been in existence for more than 15 years."

More than 1,300 pounds of food was collected in the Student Council sponsored food drive that took place during Student Enrichment Block. Activities secretary Janie Moore once again provided special assistance to the food drive.

Also during SEB, more than $1,100 was collected in Multicultural’s “Make a Change” drive during which students and SEB advisers were asked to donate their loose change. This also took place during SEB.

Holidays featured on Cyber

Four of the 16 articles now online in the December CyberPlainsman relate to the holidays.

They include a feature on the library “warming up the season,” a news story on Holiday Helpers drive, and two articles and six photos on “Home for the Holidays” choir program earlier this month.

Photos and articles about the Gem City Cowboy Classic Basketball Tournament that concluded Wednesday and state recognition the CyberPlainsman recently received are also included.

As always, a current list of the most recent financial aid opportunities from the Counseling Office and the daily announcements may also be read at my.highschooljournalism.org/wy/laramie/lhs

Twenty years ago recalled

This column will feature a brief summary of a bureau article that originally appeared in the Boomerang during the 1984-85 school year.

The bureau scrapbook from those two years serves as a source.

Nov. 30, 1984: LHS drama students participated in the state drama festival at Central Wyoming College in Riverton.

Some of the drama students included Thoro Constantinides, Laura Hand, Beth Korkow, Jeff Bayne, Anne Guzzo, Sue Brizuela, Charles Moxley, Jessica Jahns and Brooke Bard. The sponsors were Ressa Floron and Marcia Saum.
