Yearbook distribution Wednesday

This Wednesday during SEB the 2005-2006 Plainsman yearbook will be distributed.

According to substitute yearbook adviser Stacy Frude, students who pre-ordered the yearbook will be called to the cafeteria in groups during SEB to pick up their yearbook and enjoy free treats before the next group of students will be called to the cafeteria.

“Livin’ It Up” is the yearbook theme and all 144 pages will be full color photos of student and teacher portraits, sports, academics, clubs, and student life.

The yearbook, as it has been for a number of years, was printed by Jostens at their Visalia, California, printing plant.

“This year’s yearbook is less formal than last year’s. It’s more fun and laid back, the cover is also very eye catching.” said yearbook adviser Teri Robinson.

Students that have special jobs in the production of the yearbook are Brooke Arnold and Kim Walker (co-editors), Rebecca Carpenter and Esther Dunham (business managers), Haley Marsh (proofing editor), and Sarah Kersey (picture editor).

They were members of either the sixth or eighth block Yearbook classes who were responsible for the 2006 yearbook. Sixth block staff members include Kathryn Bagby, Lane Clark, Kristina Curry, Hallie Davis, Chyann Howard, Sterling Leinen, Elizabeth Miller, Jessica Platt, Joshua Raymer and Thomas Vasquez.

Eighth block staff members include Austin Garcia, Alyssa Janzen, Sarah Kersey, Marc Miller, Lauren Reynders, Samantha Toews, Mckenzie Walker and Desiree Wilson.

These students continue to work on the yearbook supplement that will be distributed next August to those who ordered the 2006 yearbook. Next year’s juniors and seniors will receive their supplements when school begins while supplements will be mailed to members of the Class of 2006.

Kirkwood named graduation speaker

Carol Kirkwood, the current Wyoming Teacher of the Year, has been selected to be the guest speaker at the LHS commencement on June 2 in UW’s Arena Auditorium.

Besides teaching French at LHS for more than three decades, she has been involved in a variety of committees at LHS. They include chair of the World Languages Department, chair of the Site Council, co-chair of the North Central Association Accreditation Committee, chair of the Building Site Council. A faculty member of the William Glasser Institute, she has also sponsored or continues to sponsor the National Honors Society, French Club and Senior Class. Kirkwood is also one of the International Club sponsors.

Not only is Kirkwood well thought of around the state, but also she is widely regarded as an excellent teacher by her students. When Kirkwood was asked about being selected she said, “I feel nervous, but very excited to speak.”

Commenting on Kirkwood’s selection as graduation speaker, one of her students, senior Denver Bohling, said, “I think it is really a great thing to have someone who has experienced so much, and cares so much about her community to be able to communicate that to the Senior Class.”

Kirkwood graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in French from Colorado State University. Later she earned a master of arts degree in French Literature from Middlebury College Graduate School of French in Paris, France. She began her teaching career at LHS in the fall of 1973.

Sr. Questionnaires past due

Senior Questionnaires that were distributed in SEB last Thursday are past due.

The questionnaires will be used for a number of stories in the second online CyberPlainsman Senior Edition. Seniors who did not receive the questionnaire should first check with their SEB teachers tomorrow or see newspaper adviser Bob Roth in room 206.

Future plans and memorable moments are the basis for the questionnaire. Members of the Class of 2006 who fail to turn in a questionnaire will obviously not be included in this special edition.

Spitting Cobras top teachers

The Faculty basketball team was defeated 60-53 by the Spitting Cobras in a thrilling championship intramural game played last Wednesday during SEB in Plainsmen Gym.

According to the Intramural Preview in the April CyberPlainsman, “The Spitting Cobras are a team that could end up beating the Faculty at the end of the season during SEB. This is due in large part to all around talent Miles Cushman. He can beat you in almost every way possible--inside or from behind the three-point arc. Marshall Kelly is another big man with uncanny comparisons to Cushman. Deadly shooting guard Kellen Hiser adds another component to this very versatile team.”

The Cobras made this prediction come true. They came into this game with three straight victories and a 6-1 regular season mark to claim the intramural championship. The Faculty, meanwhile, was 7-0.

Sophomores Galand Thaxton, Jackson Bailey and Carter Haefner played really well and kept the Cobras on top. This trio was accountable for numerous three-pointers and steals throughout the game.

The Cobras jumped to a 14-6 lead, but the powerful attack of the Faculty stormed back. With less than ten minutes remaining the faculty were within four points of the Cobras, but the deciding moment was when versatile Jason Mountain fouled out of the game.

It was the second straight year the faculty has lost the championship game.

Twenty years ago recalled

This column will feature a brief summary of a bureau article that originally appeared in the Boomerang during the 1985-86 school year.

The bureau scrapbook from those two years serves as a source.

April 30, 1986: The fifth annual FBLA Computer Show will be May 3 in the cafeteria.

Community members may will be able to see all the different types of microcomputers, electronic typewriters, word processors and other computer equipment that are on the market today.

The public can also inspect the equipment and make appointments with dealers if they want to see the equipment in more detail and in a more personal setting, according to FBLA sponsor Jo Spiegelberg.
